Snapfeed is a news reader app. We built it to respect your privacy — no accounts, no passwords, no selling your data.
What we collect
Anonymous device ID — a randomly generated identifier stored on your device. Used to personalise your feed, save bookmarks, and deliver push notifications. It is not linked to your name, email, or any personal identity.
Article interactions — which articles you view, open, or bookmark. Stored anonymously against your device ID to improve what we show you.
Push token — if you grant notification permission, your device's push token is stored so we can send the daily digest. You can revoke this at any time in your device settings.
Language preference — stored locally on your device.
Usage analytics — we use PostHog (EU servers, Amsterdam) to understand aggregate usage patterns: categories selected, screens viewed, errors. No personally identifiable information is included.
Approximate location — with your permission, used to show local weather as your first story of the day. If you decline permission or it's unavailable, we estimate your location from your IP address instead. Not shared with other users, and never used for advertising.
What we do NOT collect
Your name, email address, or any account information
Your contacts, camera, microphone, or photos
Any payment or financial information
Data from other apps or websites
How we use your data
To deliver the daily news digest notification
To remember your bookmarks and reading streak locally on your device
To show trending stories and personalise article ordering
To improve the app — we look at aggregate (never individual) usage patterns
Data sharing
We do not sell, rent, or trade your data. We use the following third-party services:
AWS (Amazon Web Services) — API and backend infrastructure, hosted in the EU (Ireland)
Neon — database provider, hosted in the EU
Expo / EAS — push notification delivery for mobile
PostHog — privacy-friendly analytics, EU servers
Open-Meteo — weather forecast provider; receives your approximate coordinates to return local weather, and does not receive any other data
Anthropic Claude — AI summarisation of news articles (article text only; no user data is ever sent)
Google Translate — translation links you opt into by choosing a non-Dutch language
Data retention
Articles and interaction logs are automatically deleted after 30 days. Your device ID and associated interactions are stored for as long as you use the app. You can request deletion at any time by contacting us.
Legal basis (GDPR)
We process data on the basis of legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) — providing an ad-free, tracker-free news experience and improving it over time. You may object at any time by contacting us.
Your rights (GDPR)
If you are located in the European Union, you have the right to access, correct, delete, or export any data associated with your device ID. Since we collect no personal identifiers, we cannot look up records by name — but we can delete all data for a given device ID on request.
Children
Snapfeed is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes
If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the "last updated" date above. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance.
